Mission Creek Comic Book Art Show
Queen's Nails Annex Gallery, 3191 Mission Street at Valencia, San Francisco

This year the Mission Creek Music and Art Festival (www.mcmf.org/) is putting together a Comic Book Art Show to benefit 826 Valencia for one night only at the Queen's Nails Annex gallery (www.queensnailsannex.com/) on Wednesday evening, May 17th. In addition to original comic book art by some of the finest emerging and established comic book artists in the Bay Area and beyond, the show will celebrate the release of various comic books and graphic novels (including Girl Stories by Lauren Weinstein and Fortune's Bitch by Eric Koepfle). There will also be live music by Steeple Chase, Flaming Fire and Little Fuzzy. A suggested donation of $2.00 - $10.00 will be asked at the door but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

A portion of the proceeds from the Mission Creek Comic Book Art Show will go to benefit 826 Valencia’s cartooning workshops and other comics-related programming for Bay Area youth. 826 Valencia is a non-profit organization based in San Francisco dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their writing skills and to strengthening each student's power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice (www.826valencia.org/)

Museum of Craft and Folk Art explores African-American quilt-making

Mothers enjoy free admission on Mother's Day May 14!

The Museum of Craft and Folk Art presents Circles Unbroken: Four Generations of African-American Quiltmakers, an exhibition of quilts by four women of one family whose quiltmaking legacy stretches back two centuries. The exhibition features eighteen quilts drawn from the collection of Eli Leon and chosen jointly with Museum staff. Circles Unbroken is on view at the new Museum of Craft and Folk Art at 51 Yerba Buena Lane in downtown San Francisco from May 4 through July 23, 2006.

Gladys Henry, Laverne Brackens, Sherry Byrd, and Bara Byrd represent four generations of this Texas quiltmaking family, who are carrying on a tradition that dates to the time of slavery in America. Rather than piecing in a conventional, all-corners-meet style, this family creates quilts guided by receptivity to the materials at hand and a sensitivity to visual rhythms and designs that emerge in the making. “I don’t go by patterns. I make it up out of my head,” Laverne Brackens says. “When you pick up the material and start working with it, that’s when you know what [the quilt] will be.” Laverne’s mother, Gladys Henry, who pieced and quilted five days a week, passed away in 1996 at the age of ninety, but Gladys’ granddaughter, Sherry Byrd, and thirty-year-old great-granddaughter, Bara Byrd, are continuing the family heritage.
